Scholarships for the University of Chicago

Located in the third most populated US city (behind New York and Los Angeles), the University of Chicago is proud to call the friendly state of Illinois home. Established in 1890, this university is one of the oldest in the Midwest. However, with a student body of around 15,400 it is also one of the smaller major universities in the area.

Further, this school has double the number of graduate students than it has undergraduate students. This certainly speaks volumes about the level of education that a U of C student will receive in their years at this Midwestern institution. The University of Chicago also has approximately 18% of its student body as international students, which is higher than average for a major academic institution.

There are actually four graduate schools within the University of Chicago. These are: Biological Sciences, Humanities, Physical Sciences and Social Sciences. Of these, the Social Sciences graduate school is by far the most popular with 37% of the graduate level students. Further, the University of Chicago is one of the leading research facilities and operates 12 research institutes on campus. There are a variety of scholarship, fellowship and grant programs in place for students wishing to attend the prestigious University of Chicago on the shores of Lake Michigan in the state of Illinois. In fact, students are certain to find one that meets their exacting specifications.

Chicago Public Schools (CPS) Scholarship

The University of Chicago provides full 4-year scholarships to a small number of outstanding Chicago Public Schools graduates who have already been admitted to the U of C. This is primarily a merit based scholarship and financial status does not affect eligibility. The value of the scholarship is the yearly cost of tuition at the college.

University of Chicago Library Fellowship

This program is a short-term research fellowship and is available to visiting researchers who live more than 100 miles from the city of Chicago. The award will be given based upon an evaluation of the research proposal and is valued at up to $3,000 per recipient.

Chicago Police and Fire Scholarship

As a tribute to the Chicago Fire Department Police Department’s service to the University, the U of C offers full-tuition scholarships to a few select children of currently active duty firefighters and police officers. Each awardee is guaranteed full tuition for four years of undergraduate study.

National Merit Finalists

The University of Chicago sponsors a scholarship for students who are National Merit finalists. The amount of the award is $1,000 for applicants with no financial need and $2,000 for those students with a demonstrated financial need.

American Bar Association (ABA) Legal Opportunity Scholarship Fund

This scholarship is dedicated to University of Chicago students who are pursuing a career as a practicing attorney. The selected application will be provided with up to $15,000 over the course of their three years of law school. Preference for this scholarship is given to students who have overcome adversity and have an exceptional academic record.
